I’m sure you’ve all heard of / have been reading about the new cuil.com search engine…one that is supposed to be the one to watch in the coming years. I’m not entirely convinced, yet, although I wasn’t convinced when Google came along at first either.
People take a while to adjust to change and so you can be rest assured that Google will remain number one for many years to come.
What makes Cuil.com different from Google you ask? Apparently Cuil can index a far more sites using much less hardware than Google currently can. It already boasts of indexing a much higher volume of pages that Google and using only a small portion of hardware.
I am unsure of the searching algortithm used by Cuil, as far as I can tell, not much has been revealed about it. Initial research has revealed a number of problems and it statistical analysis has shown that the efficiency in finding a suitable page is approximately 20% higher in google. However, Cuil is a new project, being worked on by ex Google employees and it will take to time to iron out all of the teething problems.
One of changes that will be most apparent to the end user is the results interface….Your search results are now tiled horizontally across the screen as opposed to the traditional row after row fashion. I think it looks very messy and this will be one of the areas that certainly needs revisiting.
Initial traffic volumes are very high, one wonders whether this has any correlation with potential success or the many million $ spent on an agressive marketing campaign. It will be interesting to watch Cuil.com develop.
What is most annoying from my perspective is the fact that SpittinFlicks.com is not currently indexed…I have suggested to the powers that be within Cuil that they should add this site…I await any impending action!
One thing is for sure – however this little battle pans out, the backlink algorithm that Google introduced years ago (the PageRank model) has flaws that need to be addressed. As such Microsoft thought that analysing the time somebody spends on any given page is a much greater indicator of web site worthiness than the number of backlinks. This also has many flaws in that social media web sites will dominate search results due to the fact that it is common to spend half an hour to many hours on one visit to facebook and similar.
If you can come up with an algorithm that effectively analyses web pages for searching you will be one very rich person indeed.
Until next time!
